Spider veins are tiny branched red to purple veins which
usually occur on the legs.
- How are they treated? Sclerotherapy is
the injection of a substance to scar the inside of the blood
vessel. The vessels collapse and fade from view.
- Does it hurt? Mild discomfort is
associated with spider vein destruction. It is not severe or
persistent enough to require anesthesia. For best results,
it is strongly recommended that after leg vein treatment the
patient not work for the rest of the day and wear support
stockings for the next 24 to 36 hours.
- What are the risks? Results may
not meet the patient’s expectations. 100% clearance is
difficult and most patients require 3 or more sessions for
maximal results. Rare side effects are a small ulceration at
the site of injection.
- How much does it cost? For each
session, the patient pays per area injected or for a
prolonged session doing both legs. This is not covered by
insurance plans.
